Overview

Elodie (Millie Bobby Brown) agrees to marry a charming prince to save her impoverished family. She has no idea she is the payment, not the bride. The royal family isn't looking for a new princess at all — they are looking for a sacrifice to pay an ancient debt to a dragon, and Elodie is thrown into a cave with the beast. Juan Carlos Fresnadillo's film is a dark, feminist twist on the classic damsel-in-distress trope, because Elodie is no passive victim. She is resourceful and determined, using her knowledge of the cave, her ingenuity and her sheer will to survive and escape. It's a fairy tale turned inside out: no rescue coming, no prince to save her, just a young woman, a dragon, and the question of how badly she wants to live.
