Overview

Two men, one submarine, and an order that might start a war. Aboard the USS Alabama, a nuclear submarine, executive officer Lt. Commander Ron Hunter (Denzel Washington) and commanding officer Captain Frank Ramsey (Gene Hackman) receive an order to launch their nuclear missiles — but the order is incomplete. Hunter refuses to launch, believing the order may be a mistake. Ramsey insists on launching. Tony Scott's thriller plays out almost entirely on the submarine, a tense, psychological standoff about command, loyalty and the morality of nuclear war. There is no villain here, just two good officers reading the same broken message two different ways, with the fate of the world riding on who blinks first.
