Overview

In Regency-era London, finding a husband isn't romance — it's a competitive sport, and the season is its arena. Debutantes are paraded before the Queen, families scheme, reputations hang by a thread, and the Bridgerton family steps into the middle of it with Daphne (Phoebe Dynevor), the eldest daughter, as their great hope. Enter Simon Basset (Regé-Jean Page), the Duke of Hastings, who wants absolutely nothing to do with marriage, the season, or anyone's plans for him. Naturally, he's exactly who Daphne ends up tangled up with. What follows is lavish, romantic and properly steamy — ballrooms, whispered scandals, longing looks across crowded rooms — but the show keeps it all feeling fresh instead of stuffy. Part of that is the diverse casting, which reimagines this world rather than recreating it, and part of it is the genius touch of having string quartets play modern pop songs at society balls, like the whole era secretly had a playlist. At its heart, though, this season is about two people from opposite ends of the marriage market falling for each other in a world where one wrong rumor can end everything. If you like your period drama with heat, humor and gowns worth pausing for, this is the one to start with.
