Dune
Overview
Dune is a 2021 epic science fiction film directed by Denis Villeneuve, adapting the first half of Frank Herbert's seminal 1965 novel of the same name. Set thousands of years in the future, the film follows Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet), a young nobleman whose family is entrusted with the stewardship of Arrakis, a harsh desert planet also known as Dune. Arrakis is the only source of a precious spice called melange, which extends life, enhances mental abilities, and makes interstellar travel possible. The spice is the most valuable substance in the universe, and control of Arrakis means control of everything. Paul's father Duke Leto Atreides (Oscar Isaac) is a kind and honorable leader beloved by his people, but his appointment to Arrakis is a trap set by his enemies, the scheming Baron Harkonnen (Stellan Skarsgård) and the Padishah Emperor. The Harkonnens launch a brutal surprise attack on the Atreides, slaughtering most of the family and forcing Paul and his mother Lady Jessica (Rebecca Ferguson) to flee into the deep desert. There, they encounter the Fremen, the native desert people who have learned to survive in Arrakis's extreme conditions. The Fremen believe in a prophecy of a messiah called the Lisan al-Gaib, and Paul begins to suspect that he might be that prophesied figure. The film is a masterclass in world-building, creating a fully realized universe with distinct cultures, languages, and technologies. Villeneuve's direction emphasizes scale and atmosphere, making the viewer feel the immensity of the desert and the danger of the giant sandworms that swim beneath it. The visual effects are stunning, the costume and production design are impeccable, and the musical score by Hans Zimmer is otherworldly and haunting. Timothée Chalamet delivers a nuanced performance as a young man burdened by visions of a terrible future he may be destined to create. Dune was a critical and commercial success, earning over $400 million worldwide despite being released simultaneously on HBO Max during the pandemic. It won six Academy Awards including Best Cinematography, Best Original Score, Best Visual Effects, Best Production Design, Best Sound, and Best Film Editing. The film ends on a cliffhanger, with Paul embracing his destiny and leading the Fremen toward a holy war, setting up the sequel Dune: Part Two.
