Overview
The Banshees of Inisherin is a 2022 tragicomedy film written and directed by Martin McDonagh, starring Colin Farrell as Pádraic Súilleabháin and Brendan Gleeson as Colm Doherty. The film is set in 1923 on the fictional island of Inisherin, off the coast of Ireland, during the Irish Civil War. Pádraic and Colm have been best friends for years. They meet at the pub every day at 2 PM. They talk about nothing, they drink, and they enjoy each other's company. One day, Colm does not answer Pádraic's knock. Pádraic goes to the pub, and Colm is there, but he ignores him. Pádraic asks what is wrong, and Colm tells him, "I just don't like you no more." The film follows Pádraic's desperate attempt to understand why his friend has rejected him, and Colm's increasingly violent attempts to get Pádraic to leave him alone. Colm tells Pádraic that if he tries to talk to him again, he will cut off one of his own fingers. Pádraic tries to talk to him again, and Colm cuts off his finger. He then cuts off four more. The film is a metaphor for the Irish Civil War, which was fought between former friends and neighbors over political differences that seem petty and incomprehensible to outsiders. The film is also a meditation on loneliness, mortality, and the meaning of life. Colm wants to spend his remaining years composing music, and he sees Pádraic as a distraction. Pádraic is a kind, simple man who just wants to be loved. The film ends tragically: Pádraic's donkey, Jenny, dies after choking on one of Colm's fingers. Pádraic burns down Colm's house, and the two men walk to the beach to fight. The film ends with them walking away, their friendship destroyed. The Banshees of Inisherin was a critical success, earning over $52 million on a $14 million budget. It was nominated for nine Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor for Colin Farrell, Best Supporting Actor for Brendan Gleeson, and Best Supporting Actress for Kerry Condon. The film is a dark, beautiful, and heartbreaking exploration of the end of a friendship.
