Avengers: Infinity War
Overview
Thanos isn't trying to conquer the universe. He's trying to halve it. Josh Brolin's warlord believes the only mercy left is mathematics: collect all six Infinity Stones, snap his fingers, and wipe out half of all life so the other half can live. Every hero Marvel has built gets pulled into the path of that idea. Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), Spider-Man (Tom Holland) and Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) end up on the dead world of Titan, trying to wrest the Time Stone away from Thanos himself. Captain America (Chris Evans), Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) and Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) make their stand in Wakanda, defending Vision (Paul Bettany), whose head carries the Mind Stone. And Thor (Chris Hemsworth) travels to Nidavellir to forge a new weapon — Stormbreaker — because every old way of fighting this enemy has failed. What makes the movie land is that it is structured like a tragedy, not a triumph: the heroes are brave, coordinated and completely outmatched, and Thanos does the thing villains are never allowed to do. He wins. The snap happens, heroes turn to dust in each other's arms, and the film ends in silence, with Thanos watching a sunset on a quiet planet, at peace. It's the rare blockbuster that leaves the theater stunned.
