Overview

Andor is a 2022 spy thriller television series created by Tony Gilroy for Disney+, set in the Star Wars universe. The series serves as a prequel to the 2016 film Rogue One, following the character Cassian Andor (Diego Luna) in the five years leading up to the events of that film. The series is a departure from other Star Wars projects in its tone and style. It is a slow-burn, grounded, politically complex espionage drama, more in the vein of Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy than The Mandalorian. The series follows Cassian as he goes from a cynical, apolitical thief to a committed rebel willing to sacrifice everything for the cause. The first season is structured in three-episode arcs. The first arc follows Cassian on the industrial planet of Ferrix, where he accidentally kills two corporate security guards and must flee. He is pursued by Pre-Mor security, led by the dogged Deputy Inspector Syril Karn (Kyle Soller). The second arc follows Cassian in prison, where he is sentenced to six years for being in the wrong place at the wrong time, forced to work on a factory floor building components for the Empire's new weapon — the Death Star. This arc is a powerful allegory for the dehumanizing nature of the prison-industrial complex. The third arc follows Cassian as he joins a rebel heist led by the charismatic and ruthless Luthen Rael (Stellan Skarsgård). The series also follows the Imperial side, showing the rise of the ambitious and cold-blooded Supervisor Dedra Meero (Denise Gough), who is trying to root out the growing rebellion. Andor was a critical success, praised for its writing, acting, and direction, and a second season is in production.
