American Fiction
Overview
American Fiction is a 2023 comedy-drama film written and directed by Cord Jefferson, based on the 2001 novel Erasure by Percival Everett. The film stars Jeffrey Wright as Thelonious "Monk" Ellison, a frustrated, successful academic and novelist. He is frustrated that the publishing industry only seems to value stereotypical, "ghetto" stories about Black people. He writes a parody novel, My Pafology, under a pseudonym, as a joke. The novel is a stereotypical, over-the-top depiction of gang violence, drugs, and poverty. To his horror, the novel is accepted for publication, and it becomes a massive bestseller. Monk is forced to pretend to be a fugitive criminal to promote the book. The film is a sharp, funny, and satirical look at race, class, and the publishing industry. It explores themes of authenticity, representation, and the commodification of Black pain. The film features an ensemble cast, including Tracee Ellis Ross as Monk's sister, Lisa; Sterling K. Brown as Monk's brother, Clifford; and Erika Alexander as Coraline, Monk's love interest. American Fiction was a critical and commercial success, earning over $23 million on a $10 million budget. It won the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay.
